COMEDIE DE PICARDIE
Modern design for a classic play
For this project, I was tasked with designing an advertising campaign for a university production of Le Cid, a classic French play by Pierre Corneille. Considering that it was meant to be a modernized version of the play, I opted for a mix of a bold font, flashy colors and minimalist aesthetic. The aim was to create design that captures the intensity of the play’s central themes and the emotional weight at stake in Le Cid.
Discipline: Brand design
Tools: Photoshop, Illustrator
Objectives
To get people's attention and to encourage them to go watch the play and encourage word-of-mouth advertisement.
Obstacles
To create a design that will both balance a not overcomplicated message while translating the appeal of the play - Le Cid and resonate with a contemporary student audience.
To craft averts that are simple, clear, and visually arresting to stand out in
our weekly student brochure, on the campus, in the streets as well as online.
For these designs, I tried to capture the complexity of the play's themes like honor, love, duties, and conflicts through minimalist symbolism.
During the first launch, the adverts had a light background balanced with three colors - red for love and vengeance and blue for justice - to insist on the sober aesthetic. We wouldn't want to reveal too much of the play would we?
Most of the posters were displayed along with numerous other ads and wall announcements on the university campus and in the city which made them blend in too much. This is the reason why I opted for a more contrasted background.
I chose a palette of flashy, contrasting colors - orange for energy and optimism, purple for royalty, yellow for power and green for envy and hope.
The minimalist illustrations represents key motifs. The symbolic style allowed the design to communicate these complex themes in a direct, impactful way, while still leaving room for interpretation and intrigue.
